RECOGNITION AND AWARDS
Ray Doughty Arts Integration Award
Born in Columbia SC, Ray Doughty earned his Bachelor in Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina, a Master Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University, and an Education Specialist Degree in School Administration from Western Carolina University.
Mr. Doughty has been an influential music educator and arts education advocate throughout his professional career. He founded the instrumental and choral music programs at Southside High School in Florence, SC, was the band director at TL Hanna in Anderson, SC, and was employed at West Market Elementary School as a music educator until he served as the Anderson District Five Music Coordinator. In 1986 he was appointed the State Music Consultant for the SC Department of Education and remained in that position until he became the director South Carolina's Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Project - a nationally recognized arts education reform model. Some years later he joined Winthrop University as a professor of music, lecturer in music education, and the project director for South Carolina's Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Project - a nationally recognized arts education reform model. Mr. Doughty is a member of the South Carolina Music Educators Hall of Fame, a recipient of the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Arts in Education Award, the South Carolina Arts Alliance's Scottie Award, the SCAAE (now PSAE) Founding Father Award, and the SCMEA Deborah Smith Hoffman Mentor Award. |
PURPOSE OF AWARD
To honor an individual/group/organization that embodies the true spirit of arts integration through the successful utilization of community partnerships and resources. To create a greater awareness and encourage the growth of arts integration programs in South Carolina.
CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION

CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION
- Demonstrate a sustained commitment to arts integration through support and direct involvement with arts programming.
- Demonstrate a vision for arts integration that involves collaboration between two or more groups.
- Demonstrate desire to strengthen and grow arts integration opportunities in South Carolina schools especially schools in rural areas.

- Nominator’s Statement: a one to two page, typewritten narrative that summarizes the accomplishments of the nominee as they relate to the criteria.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- A personal statement by the nominee on why they feel arts integration is an important component for a well-rounded education.
